Colonel Charles Wolfran Nugent Guinness, C.B., commissioned Ensign 72nd Highlanders, 1860; Captain 1869; served with the regiment throughout the Afghan War (1878-80), with the Keorum, Kabul and Kabul-Kandahar Field Forces, part of the time as Brigade Major to Brigadier General Macpherson, V.C., C.B. (Later Major-General V.C., G.C.B., K.C.S.I.); present at the attack and capture of Peiwar Kotal, the repulse of the enemy´s attack on the rear-guard at Zaidabad, and in the engagements at Charasiab; served during the operations around Kabul in December 1879 (Mentioned in Despatches); accompanied Sir Frederick Roberts in the march to Kandahar, and was present at the battle of Kandahar (Mentioned in Despatches; Brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel); served with the 1st Battalion Seaforth Highlanders in the Egyptian War, 1882 and was present at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir (Mentioned in Despatches; Order of Osmania); advanced Colonel 1885.
