Halsall, Machine Gun Corps ´For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during operations. He volunteered to go back for ammunition for an isolated post under shell and machine gun fire. Russia, Archangel). 345002 Sergeant John Halsall, D.C.M., a native of Southport; served during the Great War with the Liverpool Regiment in the French Theatre of War, from 7,3,1915; transferred 165th Company Machine Gun Corps, which formed in the 55th (West Lancashire) Division, 26.2.1916; Halsall´s company as part of the 55th Division were in action on the Somme, 1916, in particular at the battles of Guillemont (4th-6th September); Ginchy (9th September); Flers-Courcellete (17th-22nd September) and Morval (25th-28th September); the 55th Division were relieved by the 41st Division on the 28th September and withdrew from the front; they moved into the Ypres Salient, October 1916, where they remained for almost a year; Halsall later returned for service with the Liverpool Regiment before advancing to the rank of Sergeant and serving in the Archangel Command, Northern Russia.
