R.A.F.V.R.´, darkly toned, good very fine Estimate £ 800-1,000 D.F.C. London Gazette 6.6.1944 Southern, Robert. W.O. (1085424), R.A.F.V.R., 90 Sqn The Recommendation states: ´Warrant Officer Southern has completed a total of 50 operational sorties against the enemy, many of which have been against the most heavily defended targets. At all times he has displayed a high degree of initiative and a strong sense of devotion to duty, and he has set a fine example to the remainder of the Air Gunners on this Squadron.´ Of the 50 operational sorties that Southern flew as a Stirling and Lancaster Air Gunner, between June 1942-March 1944, they included: Bremen (3); Duisberg (5); Hamburg; Saarbrucken (2); Osnabruck (2); Frankfurt (2); Nuremburg; Karlsruhe; Wilhelmshaven; Essen; Munich; Genoa and Berlin.
