A Second World War Ship´s Bell from H.M.S. Virago A fine-quality large brass Ship´s Bell, engraved ´H.M.S. Virago 1943´, 310mm in height, 320mm in diameter, complete with clapper Estimate £ 250-350 H.M.S. Virago was a V-Class Fleet destroyer of 8th Emergency Flotilla ordered on the 1st September 1941 from Swan Hunter at Wallsend, Newcastle. The ship was laid down on the 16th February 1942 and launched on 4th February 1943. She was completed on 5th November 1943. During the Second World War she served in the Arctic 1943-44, North Cape 1943, Normandy 1944, Malaya 1945, and Burma 1945 theatres of War, and was present off Sword Beach on D-Day, 6.6.1944. After VJ Day she returned to Chatham on 11th December 1945, and was re-commissioned for service with the 3rd Destroyer Flotilla, Mediterranean Fleet, 1946. She was finally broken up in 1965. In view of the size and weight of this lot, the buyer will be responsible for its collection.
