Melita British War and Victory Medals (171313 W.H.G. Sampson. Ch. Sto. R.N.); Naval Long Service & G.C., E.VII.R. (171313 W.H.G. Sampson, Ch. Stoker, H.M.S. Sentinel.); Khedive´s Sudan 1896-1908, no clasp (W.H.G. Sampson. Sto - H.M.S. Melita. 1896), contemporarily engraved in upright sans-serif capitals, edge bruising throughout, nearly very fine or better Estimate £ 350-450 17131 Chief Stoker William Henry Guide Simpson, born Devonport, 1873; joined the Royal Navy as Stoker Second Class, 1893; served as Stoker in H.M.S. Melita, 1.10.1895-14.10.1898, including during the Dongola Campaign; served during the Great War as Chief Stoker in H.M.S. Indefatigable, and was killed in action at the Battle of Jutland, 31.5.1916, when she suffered a number of direct hits to the magazine area and sank quickly with the loss of 1,014 lives out of a complement of 1,017; Sampson is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
