Naval General Service 1793-1840, one clasp, Algiers (George Hope, Volr.), extremely fine Estimate £ 1,200-1,400 George Hope served as a Volunteer in H.M.S. Granicus when the combined English and Dutch fleets attacked the heavily fortified town of Algiers, 27.8.1816 Commander George Hope, R.N., born 1801, son of Commissioner Charles Hope, R.N. (son of the Honourable Charles Hope Vere) and younger brother of Rear-Admiral Henry Hope, C.B., R.N.; George Hope entered the Royal Navy as Third Class Boy, 1813; served in H.M.S. Latona (Captain A. Smith), bearing the Flag at Leith of his cousin Sir William Johnstone Hope; studied at the Royal Naval College, Portsmouth, 1814-1816; re-embarked in H.M.S. Granicus (Captain W.F. Wise) during the latter year; Midshipman 1817; further appointments including H.M.S. Liffey and the Royal Sovereign yacht; Lieutenant 1822; appointed H.M.S. Spartiate (Captain T. Falcon) for service on the South American Station, 1823; he there removed to the sloop Jaseur, 1825; Commander 1828; married the daughter of Vice-Admiral Delap-Tollemache.
