London Gazette 7.1.1918 Major John Bowden, R.E., Late Superintending Engineer, Ministry of Munitions, No. 2 Area (North-West England). Lieutenant-Colonel John Bowden, C.V.O., O.B.E. (1873-1948), born Newcastle-upon-Tyne; educated at Cranleigh and Durham College; employed during the Great War by the Ministry of Munitions; as Engineer of No.2 Area (North-West England) developed production of War material in Lancashire, Cheshire, Westmoreland, Cumberland, and North Wales; established National Factories; and assisted engineering manufacturers to change over from Civil to War productions (Civil O.B.E.); appointed Deputy Assistant Director of Light Railways, British Expeditionary Force, France, with the rank of Major, Royal Engineers, 6.1.1917; designed, constructed, and organized central works at Berquette and Beaurainville for maintaining and constructing Light Railway locomotives, rolling stock, and other material: whilst in charge of these works administered the technical and military operations of six Companies of Royal Engineers, Labour Troops, and Prisoner of War Companies, numbering some 2000 men; Lieutenant-Colonel, 23.8.1918; remained in France until after the Armistice before returning to the Ministry of Munitions as Deputy Controller, Disposal Board. Lieutenant-Colonel Bowden married Miss Constance Hudson, and together they lived at Harrow-on-the-Hill. After the War he was appointed Consulting Engineer, Privy Purse Office (C.V.O. 1944).
