London Gazette 14.12.1917 Pearce, Temp. Lt. (actg. Capt) H.G. (killed). Captain Henry Goold Pearce, M.C., born Hurstpierpoint, Sussex, 1886; resided in Rhodesia prior to the outbreak of the Great War; served as a Corporal in the Northern Rhodesian Rifles, from 10.12.1914; discharged 30.4.1915 to return to the United Kingdom to take a commission in the Royal Engineers; served on the Western Front with the 171st Tunnelling Company, wounded 25.4.1917; the 171st Tunnelling Company were involved in the laying of 24 mines as part of the battle of Messine, from June 1917; Pearce was killed in action, 15.7.1917, and is buried in the Poperinghe New Military Cemetery, Belgium.
