(Egypt) 718 Sergeant Mechanic (Pilot) Frederick James Hellyer, D.C.M., born Midhurst, Sussex; served with the 4th Battalion Hampshire Regiment (T.F.) prior to joining the Royal Flying Corps as Airman 2nd Class, 29.5.1913; served during the Great War on the Western Front from, 13.8.1914; Flight Sergeant 1.3.1916; served with No. 17 Squadron as part of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force, in both Egypt and Salonika; reverted to Sergeant (1st Class Pilot), 1.7.1917; posted to Central Flying School, 15.9.1917; whilst at the School of Aerial Gunnery, Hythe, Hellyer was reported missing, 7.8.1918, he and his ´machine found crashed near Danbury, Pilot injured.´ (Service Papers refer); Sergeant Mechanic (Pilot), April 1918. Hellyer´s M.S.M. is 1 of only 134 Army M.S.M.´s awarded to the Royal Flying Corps.
