Army Champion Shot Medal, G.V.R., Crowned Head issue, 1 clasp, 1935 (Rfmn. D. F. Butcher. 2-Rhodesia Regt.), mounted as worn, good very fine and rare

Approximately 19 Medals to the Champion Shot of Rhodesia issued, with several winning the competition on more than one occasion. Probably just 4 Medals issued in the reign of King George V, this being the last, assuming that the 1936 issue carried the bust of King George VI.

The first King's Medal Competition in Southern Rhodesia was held in 1926, with Butcher being the first recipient from the Rhodesia Regiment to take the prize. From 1940-47 the competition was interrupted by the Second World War. After Rhodesia's Unilateral Declaration of Independence on 11 November 1965, the competition and the award of the Queen's Medal for Champion Shots in the Military Forces continued for another four years, until Rhodesia severed its ties the Crown on 2 March 1970. The same year the President’s Medal for Shooting of the Security Forces was introduced.
