A highly unusual Sutlej Medal, struck in solid gold

Sutlej 1845-46, for Moodkee, 3 clasps, Ferozeshuhur, Aliwal, Sobraon, unnamed, test mark to upper left obverse, about extremely fine with a proof-like finish

67.29 grams, tests as 97.41 gold content.

Undoubtedly one of the most renowned recipients of this Medal and combination of clasps was Lieutenant-General Sir Harry Smith G.C.B., a veteran of many battles of the Napoleonic Wars who saw significant service and held important command appointments during the Anglo-Sikh War. He is also known for is Spanish wife, Juana, whom he rescued during the siege and storming of Badajoz in 1812 and who accompanied him during most of his campaigns.

It is supposed that this particular medal, struck from the same dies as the standard (silver) issue, may have been created as a trial, specimen, display, or special presentation piece.
