Wessex, Edward the Elder, Penny, 1.34g, imitative, North Western Viking mint, Heremod, flower type, small cross pattée within inner circle, +eadwweard rex, rev. flower of two petals extending from a central line with a star of eight points at each end, heremod below retrograde (N.658; S.1078), surface crack on obverse, a little crimped, very fine, extremely rare as a Viking imitation of the ´rare type´ issues of Edward the Elder Estimate £ 3,000-4,000 The weight of this coin is lighter than other examples known for the ´rare type´ issues of Edward the Elder. At 1.34g. this matches the Danelaw/Viking weight standard for the Penny and, this along with the rather crude style of the flower, the obverse legend and the retrograde rendering of Heremod´s name, all suggest this is imitative and from the Danish/Viking territories. Imitations of Wessex issues from this period are rare. Only two other examples of imitations of this type are known to us, both have the retrograde moneyers name and both are from different dies to this coin.
