Lot: 2033

Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, specimen $50, 1 January 1923, violet, green and black, head of the Belvedere Apollo at centre, arms at left, Great Wall of China at right, value at centre and at each corner, printed signature of A.G. Stephen low right, reverse green and brown, bank building at centre, value at left and right (P.168, Cribb Money in the Bank p.62), perforated, uncirculated and most attractive. Only one genuine issued example believed extant for this type and the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banks collection contains only Specimen examples of 1905, 1921 and 1923. Estimate HK$ 150,000-175,000This note was issued in only three dates, 1905, 1921 and 1923, and was frequently forged. As a result of these forgeries being exceedingly well executed, the Bank soon retired the issue and replaced it with the $50 dated 1927. The 1927 issues were also forged, though by 1930 the forgery problem in Hong Kong had somewhat abated. Accordingly all issue dates of this stunning type are only available in Specimen form.
