United States of America 1776 (5 Dec.) long entire letter from George Bond at "Pearl New York" to his parents in Plymouth, rated "5", marked "x post" and showing, on reverse, straight-line "portsmouth" handstamps; a long and descriptive letter including "The 15th. we ran the Gauntlet between the Town and Pawlers Hook (which were in the hands of the rebels)........we came off very well for we had but one man killed....it being dark they sent down four fireships all which we narrowly escaped by cutting our cables....we were under the fire of eleven different batteries all at one for the space of 21/2 hours & had but one man killed on board our Ship.....our troops have taken Washington´s fort they have likewise been landed on the Jerseyside and took fort Constitution.....we are ordered immediately to go and cruise the S´ward of Virginia".
