Auction: 4003 - Stamps & Covers of the World featuring Italy and Italian States
Lot: 763

Great Britain 1846 (15 Dec.) entire letter with beautiful printed address panel in pale green and red oval “(crown)/vizetelly & co. printers & engravers/1/2 oz/pre-paid/1d/fleet street” vignette at left, the first interior page with attractive printed yellow border and background together with red “vizetelly brothers & co.” pictorial header, addressed to Paris, showing red London Paid c.d.s., “pd” in oval and Boulogne transit c.d.s., rated “1/3” in manuscript; light folds and minor perimeter splits though in no way detracting from this visually striking and extraordinarily rare printed letter sheet. This is the finer of the two known examples. Henry Vizetelly was a famous publisher and pioneer of the illustrated press, perhaps best known as something of a martyr being first fined and then imprisioned in 1888/89 for publishing Zola´s “La Terre”. The lot is accompanied by a photocopy of an article, from the "Philatelist and P.J.G.B." dated Nov./Dec. 1986, relating to the other known example of this cover. Photo Estimate £ 3,000-4,000
