Portugal. Afonso V, "the African" (1438-1481). Ceitil. Ceuta (Sabtah). 0.94 gms. Castle of three towers, ramparts, base line and wave below, "D" at left, within central circle, rev. Shield with Arms in circle. The city of Ceuta was captured by Portugal in 1415 from the Kingdom of Fez. Due to its large Spanish population, it was the only city on the Portuguese Empire that sided with Spain when Portugal regained its independence in in 1640 and the War of Restoration ensued. Ceuta was formally ceded to Spain in 1668. Gomes 14.12. Very Rare. Deep olive-green near black. About Very Fine.
