BUY NOW: £22,000 | The Apogee of Briot: An Exceptional Scottish Unit | MS61+ | Scotland, Charles I (1625-1649), Third Coinage, Unit, Type I, by Nicholas Briot, CAROLVS • D : G • MAG • BRITAN • FRAN • ET • HIB • REX •, half-length King right, wearing ornate armour, holding orb and sceptre, rev. • HIS • PRÆSVM • VT • PROSIM •, crowned shield dividing cypher, 9.94g, 6h, i.m. thistle and B (Stratos 20; Murray 1; Burns 3, [Fig. 1032 same dies]; SCBI 35 [Ashmolean], 1392-96 same dies; Spink 5531), a small flaw by G, othrwise an exemplary specimen of this enduringly popular type - undoubtedly one of the finest portraits rendered by Briot, uniformly struck up and attractively toned, a pleasing extremely fine, in NGC holder, graded MS61+ (Cert. #6027414-002)

The remarkable Spink 'Stratos' sale (September 2020) mustered only an NGC AU55 example from the Chalaza cabinet. Similarly graded was the example from the lauded Millennia Collection which achieved $20,400 (£12,700) in January 2013. By way of comparison the present specimen brought a strong $14,400 at its auction six years earlier
