General French Colonies "Eagle" Issue - British Packet Agency Mail
1865 (12 Mar.) entire letter to Philadelphia, bearing 5c., 10c. cut slightly into in part of the top margin and 40c. strip of three, complete to ample margins, tied by "mqe" dotted lozenges, showing manuscript "1/-" due to the British P.O. for the packet carriage, "steamship/10" charge on arrival and, on reverse, Martinique and St. Thomas double-arc datestamps. Carried by the "Conway" to St. Thomas, from where it was transferred to the "Tamar" for onward transmission to Jamaica; the cover being marked "Via Jamaica" and struck "steam" at top (red "arrow" indicator affixed below), probably carried from Jamaica to Cuba to catch one of the American Contract Steamers operating between Cuba and the United States; A very rare maritime usage.
