First Issue of France used in Martinique
1852 (17 Jan.) envelope from St. Pierre to Toulon, paying the single rate to France via British packet with 1849-51 well margined 25c. pair and 1fr., touched at right, tied by "grille sans fin" roller cancel on arrival in France, with despatch and Toulon c.d.s. showed on reverse, "pd" and Calais red c.d.s. also tying the 25c. pair on front; fine and very scarce. Note: From 1849 to the introduction of French Colonies Eagle issue in1859, French stamps were used in Martinique; they had to be applied to the mail at the office of dispatch and cancelled on arrival in France. Beginning in late 1851 through 1853 France initiated the trial use of the first issue of France in the four colonies of French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique and Reunion; three denominations, including 10c., 25c. and 1fr. were sent to these colonies to pay the postage of 1fr.50c. per 7.5 grams to France via England by British packet, entering France via Calais.
