The Oryx collection of South West Africa, Part II
South West Africa
Tribal Tax- Ovambo Tribe
1951 Registration card bearing payment for 1941-51, the first four years paid with 1931 'Cape Cross' postage 1d. surcharged "ovambo/ 5/-", (1947 and 48 paid with bi-lingual horizontal pair, the only recorded), 1951 paid with Large format 5/- grey and brown overprinted "ovambo/ s.w.a.", the first four cancelled by Oval "native commissioner" cancellations dated "3 feb 1951", the 1951 payment cancelled by Swakopmund magistrate oval h.s. dated a year later. Filing folds running through two surcharged 1d. values as is to be expected; still an extremely rare survival, being one of only two surviving cards from from this minuscule tribe which had only 405 taxpayers in 1936, and doubly unique being the only recorded use of the 5/- grey and brown, and the only recorded bi-lingual pair with Ovambo overprints.
