1857 (6 June) double rate envelope from Sandhurst to Locarno, bearing "registered" 1/- Die II, Woodblock 6d. and Octagonal 1/- strip of four (cut-into), all cancelled by Barred Numeral "4", showing manuscript "4/2" in red, despatch d.s., "Crown/registered" h.s., circular-framed "pd" and London registered d.s. (5.9), all in red, handstruck "d6", Calais entry d.s. (additionally tying the 1/- and strip), "charge" and, on reverse, Melbourne and arrival datestamps. RPSV Certificate (2008) states underpaid cover genuine in all respects. Photo
Note: This is No. 54 in Ben Palmer's listing of Destination Mail of Victoria. He states there is a 2d. missing which explains the shortfall in the rate. It would appear to have been placed where there is now a void area in the numeral "4" postmark on the lower part of the strip of the 1/- value between the second and third units and the part of the cover directly below this area. On close examination we would tend to concur.
