The Oryx Collection of South West Africa: Tribal Tax Part I
Note: The Registration Certificates in the next series of lots were retained by Natives, in their huts over a period of six or more years. Whilst these storage conditions make their survival even more extraordinary; faults are to be expected. All cards have a horizontal fold, and most have pinholes and are soiled. Faults affecting the stamps will be mentioned in the description and consequently none of the lots in this section can be returned on the grounds of condition.


Okavango Tribe: 1936 Registration Card, with fee paid for years 1937-39, with Penalty Revenue stamps overprinted "Okavango" the first two years paid with 1933 5/- green and brown (both with damaged corners), 1939 paid with c.1933 2/6d. red and grey surcharged with thick black bar and "Okavango/ 5/-". Rare, this being one of the finest of the eleven recorded cards from this tribe. Photo
