City of London School, AE Medal, 1834, by B. Wyon, CITY OF LONDON SCHOOL, facade of the school building, FOUNDED BY THE CORPORATION 1834, I.B. BUNNING ARCH in exergue in four lines, rev. FOR THE RELIGIOUS & VIRTUOUS EDUCATION OF BOYS & THEIR INSTRUCTION IN LITERATURE & USEFUL KNOWLEDGE, Knowledge seated, instructs a youth who leans upon a tablet inscribed IOHN CARPENTER 1447, and decorated with the City arms, 58mm, 78.82g (Eimer 1279; BHM 1680), the obverse with darkened surfaces and some scuffing to the higher points, yet the reverse with a pleasing lustre to light brown surfaces, very fine / extremely fine; Visit to the City of London, AE Medal, 1837, by W. Wyon, VICTORIA REGINA, diademed bust left, rev. façade of the Guildhall, the Royal Standard flying above, IN HONOUR OF HER MAJESTY'S VISIT TO THE CORPORATION OF LONDON 9TH NOV : 1897 :, in exergue in three lines, 55mm, 74.16g (BHM 1775: Eimer 1304), lightly contact marked and with spots of verdigris, otherwise a good very fine; Opening of the Royal Exchange, AE Medal, 1844, by W. Wyon, EMPORIVM REGIVM A. THOMA GRESHAM EQ. AVR. CIVE LONDINENSI CONDITVM A. S. MDLXXI, draped bust of Sir Thomas Gresham left, rev. REST. ET. APERT. AVSP. VICTORIA REG, statue of Victoria left, with sceptre and orb; all set on pediment inscribed A: S. MDCCCXLIV XXVIII OCT. in two lines, view of the Royal Exchange in background, 74mm, 206.97g (BHM 2185; Eimer 1390), lightly contact marked and some rub to the highest points of the central devices, dark brown surfaces, nearing extremely fine (3)

i) Issued by the Corporation of London. The school opened in 1837; this medal, and designs based on it, were used as prizes in silver, for various subjects during the Nineteenth century. The City architect James Bunstone Bunning (1802-1863) whose work includes the Coal Exchange and Holborn Valley Viaduct. John Carpenter (1370-1441), was town clerk of London; his bequest endowed the foundation of the new school.
