Æthelred II 'Unræd' (978-1016), "Benediction Hand" Type, Penny, c. 991, Winchester, Æthelstan, + ÆDELRED REX ANLO, draped bust right, long cross sceptre before, within solid inner circle, rev. + ÆDELSTAN M=O PIN, hand in Benediction, within solid inner circle, 1.54g [23.8grns], 3h (SCBI -; North 769; BMC IIf; Spink 1147), crimped and straightened to peripheries with resultant hues of patchy retoning, modest peck marks behind head and traces of porosity in legends, otherwise the central devices pleasingly bold, struck details very fine or marginally better for issue, extremely rare, one of only three Benediction Hand Pennies of Winchester and the first in the name of this moneyer documented by EMC/SCBI
