Pair: Sergeant G. R. Ball, Special Air Service, late Royal Green Jackets

General Service 1918-62, 1 clasp, Northern Ireland (24277798 Rfn. G. R. Ball RGJ.); Accumulated Campaign Service 1994 (24277798 Sgt G R Ball SAS), with its named box of issue, first with edge bruise, good very fine (2)

Gary Royston Ball was born in February 1954, the son of Captain R. G. Ball, Special Air Service. Much like his father, he joined the ranks of the Royal Green Jackets, with whom he served from 1972-77, before passing selection and entering the Special Air Service, with whom he served from 1977-95.

It is interesting to note that another soldier who followed the same path at almost the same time was a young soldier named Steven Billy Mitchell (No. 24428654), who was in the ranks of the Green Jackets from 1976-84 and thence with the Special Air Service from 1984-93. Mitchell is better known today as 'Andy McNabb' and it seems likely that he crossed paths with Ball along the way.

For the Medals of Ball's father, please see Lot 292.
