D.S.M. London Gazette 31 March 1916, the original citation states:

'For Services in the Patrol Cruisers, under the command of Rear Admiral Sir Dudley R.S. De Chair, KCB, MVO during the period ending the 31 December 1915.

James Barrett earned his award with the Armed Merchant Cruiser H.M.S. Hilary in 1915. This vessel served with the 10th Cruiser Squadron until 1917 when it was torpedoed by U-88 while making for the Shetland Islands to refuel. Her crew fought back but their gunsights had been knocked out of alignment by the impact of the torpedo. Unable to land a hit on their attacker the remaining crewmen abandoned ship.
