Derek Ruffell was transferred from the Indian Army to the Royal West Kent Regiment on 14 July 1944 with a wartime commission. Advanced Lieutenant on 14 January 1946, he was further made Captain on 14 July 1950. In this rank he served through the bloody fighting in Malaya and later the British invasion of the Canal Zone during the Suez Crisis.

Ruffell was finally promoted Major on 14 July 1957 and retired on 23 December 1960. Prior to his retirement he served as a Commandant of the Gold Coast Regiment, West African Frontier Force; sold together with copied London Gazette extracts and a Death Certificate as well as a large collection of badges and buttons relating to the Royal West Kent Regiment and the Gold Coast Regiment.
