(x) Ghunzee 1839 (Lieutt. John. William. Bennett. Bengal Eur. Regt.), contemporarily engraved naming, replacement dual ring suspension, contact marks and light edge bruising, very fine

John William Bennett was born at Writtle, Essex in 1808, the son of Samuel and Mary Ann Bennett and was baptised on 4 July of the same year. Commissioned Ensign in 1829 and promoted Lieutenant in 1835, it was in this rank that he participated in the storming of Ghuznee alongside the rest of the 1st Bengal European Regiment. This unit was part of the main British storming party and saw fierce street fighting inside the fortress, with 60 men wounded and one killed. Bennett was later advanced Brevet Major in 1854 and Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel in 1856. He died in 1868.
