Army of India 1799-1826, 1 clasp, Ava (Serjt. M. Byrne, 38th Foot.), short-hyphen reverse, officially impressed naming, good very fine

Martin Byrne was from Kilbride, Ofally (WO 97/543, refers) and served with the 38th (1st Staffordshire) Regiment of Foot. The unit had served widely in the Napoleonic Wars and was sent to the Cape of Good Hope for service in the Fifth Xhosa War in 1818 and then to India in 1822. From here it was sent up for the First Burmese War in 1824.
