Lot: 164
The Remarkable "Ellerby Area" Hoard of English Gold Coins (1610-1727) | NGC AU50 | *Top Pop* | Anne (1702-1714), Pre-Union, Guinea, 1705, first draped bust left, rev. crowned shields cruciform, six strings to harp, edge obliquely milled, 8.26g [127.5grns], 6h (PAS: YORYM-18E848 = BM 2019 T668/150 this coin; MCE 211; EGC 462 [R2]; Farey 480 [ER]; Spink 3562), a small dent on the edge at 9 o'clock and a scarcely perceptible scuff in second quarter of reverse, otherwise lustrous, the reverse especially so, a pleasing very fine for strike, extremely rare, with NGC 'Ellerby' Certification, graded AU50 (#6380983-150) [Single Finest Certified]
The Pre-Union Guineas of Queen Anne are notoriously difficult to find in any condition, and above very fine they are extremely rare. CoinArchives lists just three 1705 Guineas at auction in the last twenty years. One, the Slaney coin, is from the same dies as this coin, and is superb. The others are described as 'well worn' and 'mount area repaired'. This is the single finest certified by NGC, with none recorded at PCGS (https://www.ngccoin.uk/certlookup/6380983-150/50/ // https://www.pcgs.com/pop/detail/anne-1702-1714/4180)
